Waiting for That Bolt Of Lightning Moment?

Updated: Sep 17, 2019

Are you waiting for a lightning bolt? Do you wish that the path you really want to take will be revealed to you in a moment of absolute clarity and out of the blue? Then this is the blog for you!

Sometimes you know exactly what is it you want but are not sure how to go about it. In coaching this is where you look at the obstacles in your way (often in your own mind) and then go about jumping over them. Sometimes though, you really have no idea what you want and feel you are aimlessly searching around, just waiting for that bolt of lightning to strike. If only there were an obstacle, then you would work out how to jump over it because you’re good at that! Problem solving is your thing!

In many ways waiting for the lightning bolt is the obstacle. Waiting and fruitless searching is not getting you anywhere. The more you think, the more elusive the idea becomes. The more you look the less you see. Where is that shimmering light? The epiphany you have been looking for? The anxiety around not knowing overshadows everything.

Another very common obstacle is the rules we set ourselves. By rules I mean when you tell yourself that:

“I’m in my 30’s/40’s/50’s now, I really ought to know what it is I’m looking for.”

Or

“My parents/brother/sister/family keep asking me what I am doing with my life and when I will finally settle down.”

Or

“I’m at a stage in life now when I should know.”

These rules we impose, or have imposed upon us, often put us under pressure which has no real benefit to finding that elusive lightning bolt moment.

Ways to get closer to the lightning bolt:

  • Keep exploring with an open mind and a sense of adventure and a desire to learn.

  • Forget the rules you or others have imposed upon yourself and believe you will know when you know.

  • One approach is to look at the values you hold and how they are playing a part in your life now. What is important to you deep down? What are you doing on a regular basis to keep that value fulfilled? For example if one of your core values is about having a sense of excitement in your life, what active steps are you taking to ensure that you do?

  • Be patient. If you think this great revelation is going to happen really quickly it may not have much staying power when it does arrive!
